Personally I would like to thank Roslan Aziz for giving me the opportunity to be part of the industry with Roslan Aziz Productions Sdn Bhd. It was a great journey we had together with Kamaruddin Meranun and Weng Sulaiman. We had fantastic artistes, namely Sheila Majid, Zainal Abidin, Amir Yussuf, Azman Warren, Afdlin Shauki, Zubir Ali, Karma, Prema Lucas. The Ikhlas Concert was the highlight of all concerts that we had ever done, unforgetable! Personally, Roslan to me will always be the greatest producer we ever had, way ahead with his music vision and universal hearing. No offend to anyone but I've yet to come across such talent not only in Malaysia but Asia.

Next I would like to thank Tiara Jacquelina for introducing me into the theatre industry. It was a short stint but i learned so much during the time. An industry that has so much potential on global playground for us but lack the beliefs from corporates and authority. The struggle that one has to go through to put up a production has always been a lonely battle. I hope Tiara will continue the fight and also others who has the sustaining power to do so, with not only the passion but money.

I am not going to completely shut myself out from the industry but reality sinks in of late and I have to take a step back before I can move further forward. There were mixed feelings with the result from the audience, noticeably from the social media platform. People were fuming mad with the results when it was announced, blaming the poor judgement from the jury, insulting the winner as not a deserving winner but who is to be blame for all these? Should fingers be pointed out to an individual or the reality of all these so called awards that we have? The award shows are mushrooming as much as the artistes in the country but do we have an award that is sanctioned and recognized? A prestigious one that one can be proud of or are they just mere content for the organizers?

One man's food could be another man's poison. Music is very subjective, all about taste, depending on the exposure one gets. Should music be judged and award be given based on technicalities? Who is a jury or judge to tell us what is the best music to listen to? What is good music and what is good lyric? It's all up to an individual's imagination and acceptance.

We have established artistes as finalists, who has big fan based and sales. Why do they need to compete for an award and for someone to tell them that they are no better than a new comer? Awards should be given for recognition and not through a competition. Give them based on sales. Why? This will encouraged their management to work harder to ensure that their artiste's album or single sells. Make the recording company pay for their marketing, advertising and promotions, which is a very rare case these days. Good sales means good for the industry and we are complaining that album doesn't sell these days and blame it on piracy. Have we done enough to justify why people should buy an original album? Artistes should already be a brand on their own, they don't need to go through competition to win awards, let the audience be the judge through their purchase of your album, go to your concerts and appearances. Why do you need for someone to judge your creativity and let you know whether your are good?

I understand if it's a reality show to unearth new talents as these people do not get the opportunity to expose themselves, thus needs a platform to be notice. But for an established artistes to contest is just a big NO!

Organizers may want to look at this in the future and give credibility to artistes who deserves recognition and respect. Don't force them to participate into something that might degrade them instead of placing them at a more respectable position. They sacrificed and work hard to be where they are now, don't kill them overnight and take advantage of their desperation. Artiste Management too, please don't think of only the present, make sure the Artiste's lifespan last forever. Have it planned and execute accordingly. Remember, the Artiste is your product and it is your responsibility that they last forever in the market and a competitive one. There's a big difference between PA and Manager, so Artiste please make sure you engage the right one.

One last word: Now the judge has made a winner, a new comer, will that guarantee her success? Or has your decision closed all doors on her? People hate her for no reason and it's not even based on what she has done but on what you have decided. Please think and don't make a decision because you want to be different with your result!

The Forgotten Heroes in the Formation of Malaysia?

I believed these are the first batch of represententives to Parliament and none of them were remembered during the recent Hari Malaysia celebration and some of them are still alive to tell the true story of what transpired in the negotiation between Sarawak, Sabah, Malaya and Singapore. An opening act by the two of the so called Diva's is already a nightmarish curtain raiser to the award night. Why of all the products that we have, must be Siti and Kris Diyanti? Has this got to do with the presence of her product being one of the sponsors and KD being her good friend? Shouldn't AIM be projecting a change in our industry, a new revolution of artistes and sound alike? Why have the two 'has beens' need to spoil the evening right from the start? Next is the result. Siti won numerous awards that could have gone either way but being Siti I supposed, at any expense, she has to win whenever she is nominated! This mindset has to change for the betterment of the industry as a whole, not just to please some financially strong backed artiste! Next is the Kembara Award which normally goes to an artiste/person that has contributed locally and internationally for the music industry. Bunkface won simply for performing in Perth, Maldives and Singapore, that to University students and Malaysians studying there! Where is the value of Kembara Award? Politics in the industry playing a part here? Yes! Yuna deservingly won numerous award, with her fresh sounds, yes no one can take that from her. Well done! Faizal did a great performance, deserved the applause and ZeeAvi despite singing with 'red teeth', shows why she has that international recognition! Kudo's to the girl from Borneo! Overall the production was mediocre and not anywhere near how an award should be produced. The producers should have learned from other international awards that has been shown over our TV but chose not to! Yes they are going to tell us it's the budget constraint but, hey, work within your means creatively! Lastly, we have the hosts who made a mockery of the industry, we need humor but not the silly ones! My final conclusion to AIM is: Production: Sucks! Results: Fixed! Hosts: Nonsense!

Leave Zee Avi alone!

This is the problem with the mentality of some of our entertainment reporters! I read this with disgust this article from Pancaindera, a supplement of Utusan Malaysia! In the first place this girl from SARAWAK made it on her own, she speaks fluent SARAWAKIAN MALAY and she's proud to be one! Music is her universal language, not English. We SARAWAKIAN are proud of her achievement and if you don't understand or refuse to acknowledge her just because she has her own mind, LEAVE HER ALONE! The people of MALAYSIA are proud of her and 1 MALAYSIA is not about talking Bahasa Malaysia, it's about UNITY, regardless of race or religion Please go to the PM's office and get the concept right before you start slandering our self-made ambassador! This reporting is very harmful to the artiste who has done her part in promoting the Country with her talent, the reporting is not showing any respect to the contribution she made and this reporter should not touch on patriotism just because Zee Avi is not one of your usual industry victim who has to kiss your ...s to make it! Can you then advise our PM, Ministers and other corporate figures to make their speeches overseas in Bahasa Malaysia please, just for someone like you to understand! Broaden your mentality, understand the 1 Malaysia concept, know your subject before you condemned anyone, or else just leave your job and leave Zee Avi alone! The next thing you say is this is a letter sent by an anonymous person, a coward excuse!

Zee Avi mengecewakan

Zee Avi

Boudz Not So Entertainment News!

No intention of going to the Dayang and Marcel gig at HardRock last night but was dragged by friends. Firstly I have never been a fan of either, not a fan of any artistes for that matter, be it local or international. I appreciate music/song individually, regardless who the singer is, material with great melody and composition. The show started at 11pm with both artiste doing a duet, don't ask me what song it was and of course the praising of each other, complimenting each others popularity and vocal prowess! Marcel sounded just like any other Indonesian R&B singer, trying to make 'cute' little move without any purpose, an in-house band could have entertained the crowd better. Dayang was trying to cope with the attention Marcel was getting and making her own 'Beyonce' moves. The show went on with the same script for 2 hours, praising, complimenting each other which gets to a few nerves after a while. I have no intention of putting anyone down here but rather hope it will be taken as a constructive criticism. Dayang has a great vocal but I wish she remain herself and not try to emulate anyone with her singing and performance style. Yes, do emulate Beyonce but on her achievements but don't try to be her! Even in club stint please do realize that the show needs to be choreograph, well plan repertoire with a built up and ends with a climax. The production needs to be design on it's lighting and effects to create a better impact and mood for better entertainment, visuals are important as proven with video clips which can help to make a not so interesting song remembered. A talent with Dayang's voice should have been a brand name in the industry by now but where did it go wrong? Management and guidance! When an artiste is complacent and gets carried away during the good times, long time plan is forgotten and without proper planning and strategy, this happens. Being an artiste is not only about looking good and sounding good but it's like any other product, it needs a business plan to have market sustainability. To be a star overnight is not the issue but to be there forever is always hard work and commitment. Our local artistes comes and go, here today gone tomorrow simply because of lack of planning and no management team. The so called 'Managers' are merely PA who has no vision and failed to see the artistes as an asset and potential 'branded product'. They coordinate dinner show inquiry, interviews etc.....basically a worker for the artiste but feeling good to be called manager! What would people remember of last night performance if any? The songs to the ardent fans which is as good as listening to their album at home. There wouldn't be a sigh of satisfaction on how great the production was or how fantastic the performance was and as for a non fan like moi, I remembered my Beef Fajitas I had for dinner at HardRock!

Jangan salah gunakan aplikasi ICT - Jangan salah kami!

The article of 'Jangan salah guna aplikasi ICT' in Utusan Malaysia today is debatable as there are pros and cons on application technology that must be weigh accordingly. Is it politically sensitive or a threat to the Country's security? Politician should be able to absorb and listen to the voices of the people who voted them to where they are now and not anyone can have the opportunity to see them personally to make their dissatisfaction known and these 'application' is the best platform for them to do so. If in the first place the country's administrators are more sensitive to the rakyat rather than personal agenda, they would not have been vocal and frustrated, which leads to them resorting to condemn openly their dissatisfaction. Don't threaten people who has voted you to be where you are now because the next thing they'll do is vote against you in the election as people see change as their last option. Please be more sensitive in tackling this issue of application technology as everyone has moved forward and if you don't 'update' yourself to the latest 'application', make way for the new ones who are more 'tech savvy' and living the age of today!

Pemuda PBB akan pujuk muda-mudi daftar mengundi. Never ending story!

Have we not learned, it's all about upbringing. Why do we always do things last minute just because election is round the corner. The youth could be nurtured from young on the importance of a vote, how it can make a big difference to who would rule the state and that it's their responsibility to determine the outcome of an election. I've noticed the same tactics by our PBB and for that matter, BN as a whole, to only reach out when they feel they need to and not the youth as a priority in upbringing them to be a responsible society. Do we give them enough attention prior to this? Organizing sporting activities to win their heart is so old school, they are worth more than that. They need love and attention, someone to be there when they need someone, not waiting for circumstances to get all that. One of the ways to ensure success and participation in any youth development program is to make it sound fun. It should be in their language and not that of overbearing authority. How many of the constituencies that we have has a centre to look into the problem of the youth, somewhere where they can go for assistance and consultations? None that I know of!
As a State we are facing a period of rapid change and turmoil. The youth are being told conflicting stories about it all. I am not in the position to dispute the result, the winners made their mark in the industry, created a name for their hard work and determination. Refreshing to see the new generation making their statement with impact in the film industry! We hope to see them keeping up with their excellent work and pray that one day Malaysian film will be a global appetite! What is mind boggling to me is the quality and presentation of the 'Event'! In the first place, being The Major award for the film industry, why is it called a 'Festival'? It is probably a festival for the organizer but our industry deserved a better recognition than just calling it a festival. It is an AWARD NIGHT, recognizing the work and achievement of the players in the industry. It should be a glamour and glitter evening with the presence of who's who in the industry. Why is it moved around all over the country every year? Shouldn't it be 'the venue' that people will be looking forward to? Look at the awards globally, they never change venue from day one and Film Industry Award is the ultimate of all awards. It became a 'BRAND'. The settings, the presentation, the performances, basically the program for the evening needs to be rethink. With the mushrooming of young talents, it's about time the look of the event gets a better attention and tastefully done. It's a shame to see the non progression of the look and feel, the lighting and backdrop is so very backward! Why can't we have a grand Award Evening with all 'THE' industry people attending, why do we have to have VIP's, who is not even part of the industry! We don't need them to glamourize the event, you'll end up with protocols! Red carpet should be walked by actors, production personnel, all nominees etc. Lets work on Malaysia Film Award and create it into a 'BRAND', not just merely a festival! Lastly, what's with the finale presentation? The announcer called it 1 Malaysia, a scene from the movie Estet. Is 1 Malaysia consisting of Malay and Indian only?

WCOPA under investigation!

Congratulations if I have to say to boost the confidence of our local artistes but please do not get carried away with this achievement as the credibility of WCOPA is still a big question mark!

I am not discrediting the ability and talent that we have but the platform that they stood in winning these medals! I don’t want to give them hope in thinking that they are the greatest on Earth.

Even the “smaller” reality shows like American Idol and Britain’s Got Talent are getting coverage from International media like CNN etc…..

Their winners made it big in the global platform selling millions of albums and yet they are not World Champion!

Has anyone heard winners of WCOPA before in the international arena?

I’m questioning the integrity of MCOPA and the objective of the organizer. Why don’t they just call it World Festival of Performing Arts, similar to WOMAD, or close to home, Borneo Rainforest Music Festival!

That you don’t mislead the artistes and audience in general thinking that we are World Champion!

Give them due credit and respect by creating an international platform to perform, show them appreciation of their talent by giving them medals if necessary but don’t make them, think that they are world champion.

Music is subjective and The Olympics showcase all the best in the world but WCOPA? The latest is the BIG DEAL on THE NO BIG DEAL 'The Championship of Performing Arts held in Los Angeles where our local talent won 'big'! Participants were supposedly from all over the world, including Malaysia. What we know is most of them comes from all over US, foreign nationals residing there! If this is such a big thing, why was there no coverage on eg CNN, just like American Idols and Britain has got talent? I've been following this news since the day we participated and our winners until today remains the same, stuck in Malaysia! Shouldn't they have been noticed by the big players of the industry in US? Why are they still performing locally or if overseas, as Tourism Ministry's entertainer at their festival in market places worldwide! We bragged on defeats at local music award due to favouristism but what's the big deal, it's not anywhere near the Grammy's! We must think far, strive for global recognition and improve our country's economy by bringing income home. There is just too many local reality shows, awards etc, merely to boost ego's and personal pockets! Is it getting us anywhere? Look at Proton, Petronas etc......that is global achievement and don't tell me just because they have the means! We have to find the means and convince the authority that music is an investment of sort! Tourism should captitalize on our talent but make sure you pick the right product, no favouritism, it must be based on merit and reality of the music lovers worldwide! Strategy is the ultimate answer and get professionals for advise, not just another government servant who thinks they know all subject!

Wake up comrades!

Industry in bad shape? Are they finally admitting that they just do not know what they have been doing all these years? Do we have the right people with the right attitude and energy managing and creating our industry? Where are all the foreign labels that were supposed to uplift our local talent into the global arena? Have we been too complacent with our success domestically and thinking that we are on top of the world? Can we say we are proud of our achievement even if we do get to perform abroad but the audience are Malaysians? What is the big fuss with Indonesia? Is that all that we want to be, entertained and pampered just because they have a big population? Do we have to be united, and to achieve what? Mess is not the word to describe the state of our industry. What it is today is and has always been what our industry is all about! Has anybody, especially the foreign labels, taken any bold move to be different and take risks? Are they willing to spend for our local talents and groom them to be a music icon internationally? They are just happy laughing to the bank with their exploitation on our market selling foreign releases that they do not have to spend much on. No recording production costs, publicity been done globally, not much A&P costs, making margins bigger for them. What is our A&R doing in the recording labels, where is our marketing maestro to strategise and convince consumers, where is our management to look after the development and affairs of our talents, to help and groom them into a superstar? Do we have all these professionals? The approach has to change and the attitude of people in the industry must be more sophisticated and up to date with our knowledge in global industry, as we are already in 2009! The government has a vision 2020 where we want to be globally competitive. Has any of our music association or labels done R & D to realize this? Don’t we want to see our talent at Grammy’s instead of making such a big deal with Indonesia? Can we be more ambitious than just being complacent with being a winner of a reality show? Can we not be selfish, thinking about monetary gains at the expense of budding, ambitious talents? Success will come with money and global gain means much more to the economy of the country. We determine and create our own future, nobody should tell us what’s in n what’s out! It’s all about marketing! Do we have to be continuously colonised by foreign labels and let them determine what we should be listening to or how our music industry must be dress? Do we have to feel intimidated by foreigners that sounded local? Have the industry players been lying to the people on our capability? Other industries are taking risks and making the bold move to go global, car industry, manufacturing, engineering, food etc. Our music? Can we focus on this matter rather than bickering on who can do what for our industry locally? If anybody from inside or outside the industry feels they can contribute, please do so. Jgn jadi katak bawah tempurung! Telco’s are doing a great job exposing local talents, giving them maximum exposure on the campaign platform in realising their ROI target! They are killing the artistes a slow death with their free shows and appearances, something the recording company couldn’t care less as they have choices. But the artistes? Paying concerts are gone for the locals; Telco’s has devalued our artistes to an extent that shows and engagement are things of the past.

Things that we should seriously look into are:

1. Identify professionals on different background to run and manage the recording labels, both local and international. A&R, Marketing, Management, Creative, Publicist and CEO’s (Finance, Administrators etc).
2. Revamp the recording company’s policies and objectives to suit the content available in this part of the world.
3. Exploit the Digital platform available which will simultaneously put us in the global market.
